 Location
Petroglyph Provincial Park is located just south of Nanaimo. Access to the park is from a pulloff on Hwy 1. Watch for signs. Outdoor Activities There is a high concentration of prehistoric rock carvings at this park. The First Nations peoples created these traditional carvings over 1000 years ago. Concrete replica castings of the petroglyphs can be found in the main interpretation area and visitors can make rubbings of the castings from these. Rubbings are a great souvenir of a visit to this intriguing and educational park. A short walkway leads from the parking lot to an interpretive area. There are information boards with details about the history of the area origins of the petroglyphs. The images depicting everything from mystical wolf-like creatures to fish and human figures were made for a variety of reasons, including territorial ownership and to commemorate special events among a people with no written language. Picnicking There are no picnic or bathroom facilities at this park. Fires Fires are not permitted at this park. Nearby Parks Nearby parks to the north include Rathtrevor Provincial Park, Little Qualicum Falls Provincial Park, Englishman River Falls Provincial Park, Cathedral Grove at Macmillan Provincial Park.
