Location
Stamp River Provincial Park is located northwest of Port Alberni on central Vancouver Island . Follow Hwy #4 past Port Alberni and turn onto Beaver Creek Road . Follow signs to the park. Outdoor Activities Hiking There are 2 km of walking trails at this park. A 0.5 km trail leads from the parking lot at the day-use area to the fish ladder. A lookout above the fish ladder has great views of the river and spawning salmon in the autumn. Signs at this point offer information about the fish spawning cycle. The trails continue through the forest. There is also a loop trail that overlooks the river.
Salmon The park's main attraction is the annual run of Pacific salmon circling in the pool below Stamp Falls before climbing the fish ladders on their way to spawning beds. This natural phenomenon occurs from late August with sockeye and until December when Coho and Chinook are seen. Black bears also come to the river to feed on these salmon so be cautious while in the area.
Fishing While fishing within the park boundaries is restricted to specific areas, this park is a popular base camp for anglers fishing other parts of the Stamp River , as well as visitors traveling to and from the Pacific Rim . Fishing is allowed in Stamp River park, but is closed 200m above & 500m below Stamp Falls from June 15 to November 15. Boundary markers are located on trees along the river. Changes to the regulations occur regularly along this river, so all anglers should check the current regulations prior to fishing. Anyone fishing or angling in British Columbia must have an appropriate licence. Picnicking There is a day-use/picnic area, located past the campground alongside the river. There are 4 picnic tables and 2 pit toilets. A water tap is located near the entrance to the campground. This area is first come, first served. Camping There are 23 non-serviced sites at this campground. They are all set in a mature forest and many sites overlook the river. There are pit toilets located in this campground and a fresh water tap near the entrance. Some of the sites are reservable but there are sites saved for campers with out a reservation. Prices Camping costs $16.00 per night and there is a second vehicle charge of $8.00. Additional sleeping units are permitted in an occupied campsite but there is a camping fee charge of $16.00. The prices for camping are seasonally adjusted to the provision of services . Winter season is October 15 to April 30, or until full services are resumed, rates are $11.00 for everyone. Shoulder season is April 15 to June 15 and after Labour Day to October 15 where the rate is $16.00 and seniors pay $8,00 per night. Peak season is June 16 to Labour Day where the rate is $16.00 and seniors pay $16.00 per night. Second vehicle charges are $8.00 per night with a campsite.
BC seniors over 65 must provide a BC gold card to pay half price prior to June 15th and after Labour Day. During the peak season seniors pay full price. ReservationsTo make a reservation in the campground please contact Discover Camping or phone them toll free at 1-800-689-9025. Fires Campfires are allowed in designated fire rings provided. During a fire ban fires are not allowed anywhere in the park. Firewood is available to visitors in the park at the Gatehouse at a cost of $7.00 per bundle or $18.00 for 3 bundles. As the park is an ecological reserve it is illegal to burn wood or material from the forest. Nearby Parks Sproat Lake Provincial Park is within a 20 minute drive from the park and is renowned for its warm lake waters and Mars Water Bombers. Cathedral Grove at Macmillan Provincial Park and Little Qualicum Falls Provincial park are about 50 minutes south of Stamp Falls on HWY#4.
